Michael Jang

With youthful disobedience, Michael Jang secretly documented the subcultural circles of a San Francisco that he took part in shaping, pioneering the visibility of Asian American identity through images of his imaginative home life and, with a keen sense of timing, iconic moments in California history. His determined approach is textured by his signature spontaneous style, exposing a narrative of pure joy and candid jest. Jang’s honors include a Guggenheim Fellowship, and his photographs are in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, Asian Art Museum (San Francisco), Museum of Modern Art (New York), National Gallery of Art (Washington, DC), and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, among others.
