Five Questions with Stanley Whitney

  • August 20, 2026

Why did you accept the invitation to design the Summer 2026 edition of All-Story?
I thought it would be interesting. It’s not something I usually do. It was a fun project.

Were there any surprises in the design process?
There were a lot of surprises. I loved seeing what Zoetrope’s designer chose, where they placed images, etc. It was really a collaboration.

Any challenges?
Not really.

Might you offer any advice to future designers?
Be daring and do something out of the ordinary.

What’s inspiring you of late?

Visual:
I just saw the Matisse show [Matisse, 1941-1954, at the Grand Palais] in Paris for a second time. I’ve always admired Matisse, and it’s a well-curated show. Very special.

Musical:
Right now I’m listening to a lot of Bud Powell.
