Why did you accept the invitation to design the Summer 2025 edition of All-Story?
It’s such an honor to be asked to contribute to such a beautiful publication, and to be next to such great writing. I love so much my experience reading issues of All-Story.
Were there any surprises in the design process?
I was surprised at how smoothly it went, and I was pleasantly surprised at the pace I was allowed to work at.
Any challenges?
I’ve done a pretty bad job of keeping good photographic records of my work, especially in the earlier part of my career. Rounding up photos and putting them together was difficult, and long overdue.
Might you offer any advice to future designers?
The All-Story team knows what they are doing—trust them and their input.
What’s inspiring you of late?
Visual:
[Swedish textile artist] Britta Marakatt-Labba. I’m hoping to see her solo show in spring of 2026.
I am also excited to see the work of Nick Doyle, an old colleague at Tom Sachs’s studio. We’re in a group show together at Perrotin New York October 30 through December 20, 2025.
Buffalo Bill’s “Wild West” show at the 1889 Paris World’s Fair.
Musical:
I’m loving the song “Cherry” by J. J. Cale.
Roger Miller’s Tender Look at Love—yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
Last night, I had the honor of seeing a Jonathan Richman show. He’s amazing and never disappoints.
Textual:
I’ve just read three fabulous biographies by Sue Prideaux: Wild Thing, about Paul Gauguin; Strindberg: A Life; and Edvard Munch: Behind the Scream. They are all so good, especially Wild Thing.
Mark Twain by Ron Chernow
The poetry of Frank Stanford
