Roberto Bolaño

Roberto Bolaño (1953–2003) was born in Santiago, Chile. A writer of novels, short stories, essays, and poetry, he won the Rómulo Gallegos Prize in 1999 for his novel Los detectives salvajes (The Savage Detectives) and was posthumously awarded the National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction in 2008 for his novel 2666. In August, New Directions will publish the English translation of his story collection The Insufferable Gaucho.
