Puffed Rice and Meatballs

by Lara Vapnyar

Puffed Rice

Katya lives in a new world, Brooklyn, amongst strangers. When one asks about her past, she talks of Communist rationing, a childÂ’s desires for meatballs and understanding of the differences between boys and girls. She erects those stories to disguise the truth—the friction of material envy and the volatility of burgeoning sexuality.
