Glory was driving John Boorman long before he became the great director.
In a mid-20th-century bomb-gutted London, he was a young man lacking capital
and skills but brimming with grand designs. He started and sold small businesses,
discovered Eliot and Newton, fell in love with the same woman as his best friend,
and cooled his ardors by swimming in the frozen Thames in the dead of winter.
Here, Boorman eulogizes his 1950, a feverish interlude between his service to
school and the army.
