My Son the Fanatic

by Hanif Kureishi

My Son the Fanatic

Parvez is a Punjabi in England, driving a cab, raising a son, and seeking a better life. When his son Ali rejects present comfort for past heritage and religious discipline, Parvez reaches blindly across the widening moat between them to pull him back, consulting his friends at the cabstand and a prostitute named Bettina for advice. In Parvez’s increasing consternation, Kureishi portrays the inherent friction of a transplanted culture.
