In 1931, hot from the success of directing Bela Lugosi in Dracula, Tod Browning was hired by MGM to direct Freaks, an adaptation of the little-known short story "Spurs" by Tod Robbins. MGM wanted a film to "out-horror Frankenstein"—and it got what it asked for. Today it's considered one of the greatest horror films to have reached the screen.
