Zoetrope Short Story Writers’ Workshop
at Blancaneaux Lodge, Belize

June 18 – June 25, 2011

Belize Short Story Writers' Workshop

Come to Francis Coppola's beautiful Blancaneaux Lodge in Belize for the tenth annual Zoetrope Short Story Writers' Workshop. Join the magazine's editors and today's leading writers as we explore all elements of short fiction in an intimate, supportive atmosphere conducive to self-expression.

The Workshop
Participation is limited to twenty-five students to ensure the optimal balance of individual attention and a breadth of perspectives. Each day features intensive, small group workshops with guest instructors and editors, guided writing exercises, and private writing time. Each night concludes with student and instructor readings, local entertainment, or indulgence in the amenities of one of Central America's most celebrated and luxurious properties.

For relaxation and inspiration, the lodge staff leads trips to the Mayan ruins at Caracol, the Rio Frio Cave, the Rio On Pools, and the Barton Creek Cave, where we canoe among the stalagmites and stalactites. The afternoons are free to enjoy the property, riding horses, hiking jungle trails, swimming in the Privassion River, or simply lounging in the newly installed plunge pool with a drink and a view of the river. For additional fees, guests can schedule any of a complete range of spa services.

Accommodations and Meals
There is a choice of accommodations, all personally decorated by Mr. and Mrs. Coppola with local materials and artworks. Skirting the Privassion River, the four deluxe two-bedroom villas possess open-air living rooms with hammocks, couches, and kitchenettes beneath thatched roofs. Each bedroom is equipped with a private screened porch and spa bath and can host one or two students. The ten cabanas face either the river or the garden, and each includes a private bath, screened porch, and hammock. A cabana can host one or two students.

The food at Blancaneaux is among the best in Belize, most of the ingredients picked daily from an organic garden on the premises. The day starts with delicious local coffee and freshly squeezed juices, homemade bread and granola, and plates of fresh fruit. Lunch presents a full menu of sandwiches, salads, soups, and pizzas from the only wood-burning pizza oven in the country. Dinner offers more salads and soups from the garden, local appetizers like seviche, a choice of critically acclaimed entrees, and local desserts.
