Part of Denis Johnson's highly acclaimed collection Jesus' Son, "Emergency" was first published in The New Yorker and was anthologized in The Best American Short Stories 1992. The film adaption of Jesus' Son, directed by Alison MacClean (whose films Crush and Kitchen Sink were both nominated for the Golden Palm Award in Cannes), premiered in 1999 at the Telluride Film Festival, the Toronto Film Festival, and the Venice Film Festival, where it was nominated for the Golden Lion Award. The film stars Billy Crudup and Oscar nominee Samantha Morton and will be released in the U.S. later this year.
